How to read this chart The Sun sits at the center and distance increases outward in light-years. Stars are placed around the circle according to the direction they appear in the sky from Earth, with the outer markers pointing toward familiar references such as Polaris, Orion, and the Milky Way's center. The empty inner ring begins at one light-year, keeping the solar system as its own separate map, and the timeline reveals systems once they have at least one published story.
